A blog post on healthy project teams reminded me that it's the people closest to the work, actually doing the work that are the most important part of the team. If you choose to focus on process, and enforcing compliance, you have chosen to micro-manage, telling people how to do their work. You have also chosen to indirectly tell them that they have no say in how they do their work. This does not create a successful environment for knowledge workers who must be creative, inventive, and innovative in their work product.
